FAQ:

When was Büro Destruct founded?
We started around 91/92 as Destruct Agency to promote young artists as well as to do exhibitions and performances. After this we got more and more focussed on graphic design projects. So we changed our name and officially started in 1994 as Büro Destruct.

What does Büro Destruct mean?
Büro is the German form of the French word „bureau“ – which means office. Büro represents order, structure, cleanness and correctness. And Destruct stands for the very opposite: disorder, chaos and creativity. Our main goal is to find a balance between order and the destruction of it.

Do you hire work?
No, we don’t. But you can hire us for your work, of course:-)

Do you offer internships?
Yes, we do. For further informations and to fill out the internship appliance form, please check www.burodestruct.net/bureaudestruct/info/internships.html.

Do the 5 of you all work and live together in a studio?
We are a working studio environment. We do not live together though sometimes we do make trips and/or parties together. All in all the small and familiar environment is a good base to work/design in.

Why is BD based in provincial Berne?
First of all, Berne with its beautiful river Aare is a very lovely town. Its slow pace allows us to work in a very laid back way: It stimulates our creativity. Here, we are able to pursue our own interests in quiet and tranquility. Berne gives us the chance to work precisely and assidously – like a bee. But we’re also inspired by our travels to big cities and cultural melting pots, of course;-)
Here are ten reasons to work in a small city like Berne (to be found in Büro Destruct II):
1. No Rush-Hour
2. Big Design
3. Clean Water
4. Cute People
5. Big Beats
6. Nice Cheese
7. Less Stress
8. Better Friends
9. Huge Clients
10.Less Pollution

Which books were produced by BD?
The first ’Büro Destruct’ was published in 1999. It begins by offering a retrospective of our company’s huge variety of work from 1994 to 1999.
’Electronic Plastic’ followed in 2000, documenting a bygone era of consumer electronics from the collection of designer Jaro Gielens. ’Narita Inspected’ was released in 2001. Lopetz researched and designed this project with contemporary Japanese graphic designers. The work samples themselves remain central to the book but another important aspect is the designer’s everyday environment.
’Büro Destruct II’ was released in Summer 2003 and continued to update the readers with the output from the 1999 to 2003 in a more structured way than the first. It shows as many different design styles as possible, too.
’BD Origin’ was published in Winter 2004 in a limited edition of 600 ex. – all numbered and signed. The sketchbook officially accompanied the same called exposition at the gallery of Lucy Mackintosh in Lausanne and shows our work unpluggged.

Did you also design the books los logos and dos logos?
No, we didn’t. We just designed the cover of the first book and gave it its name. For further informations about logo submissions please refer to www.die-gestalten.de. To learn more about our own internet-project www.loslogos.com, read question no. 3 under section ’projects’.

What are BD Smelly and RGB?
They’re both part of the BD zoo:
Smelly was born by coincidence in an eps-file of Lopetz on the 28. of August in 1996. He is the mascot of Büro Destruct and his hobbies are rollerskating in Shibuya Tokyo and swimming in the river Aare in Berne.
RGB by MBrunner is a very cheerful unicorn actually meant to be a character for a fairy tale. Later on, it became the mascot of the VID videofestival in Berne. It spreads pure joy wherever it goes. The name RGB means red-green-blue. Both BD Smelly and RGB can be purchased at Büro Discount as inflatable plastic fantastic for unmeasurable water pleasures: check www.burodiscount.net.
